Father arrested after shooting 6-year-old daughter in Federal Heights

FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. — Police arrested the father of a 6-year-old girl after they said he accidentally shot his daughter in the leg late Friday night.

Officers responded to the home located in the 2000 block of W. 91st Place in Federal Heights at approximately 11 p.m., where they said 28-year-old Julian Montoya took a 9 mm pistol out of his car, and was looking at it in the driveway.

According to Federal Heights police, the gun accidentally went off, and a fragment of the bullet hit Montoya’s daughter in the leg.

The 6-year-old, whose name has not been released, was taken to Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Montoya is being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony child abuse.
