DENVER -- Shawn Brndiar has gone from addict to top of his class.

The 37-year-old, former methamphetamine addict, just graduated from Metropolitan State University of Denver, Summa Cum Laude.

Almost 5 years ago, he was shot by Lakewood Police, near a Wal Mart at 2nd Ave. and Wadsworth Blvd.  Police say Brndiar wrestled away a stun gun from an officer, Brndiar would only say he was trying to hold onto his backback. Either way, he was shot once in the stomach.  He says meth played no role in the incident, but the shooting made him realize his life had to change.

Brndiar was one of 1,860 to receive Bachelor's degrees.  He plans to pursue his Master’s in social work.
