City of Denver launches car vs. pedestrians safety campaign

DENVER -- Mayor Michael Hancock announced a campaign Wednesday to stem the tide of crashes that involve cars and pedestrians.

It's called "Heads Up." It asks drivers to stay focused and not look at that text or take that call on the cell phone.

There have been 117 people either killed or hurt this year alone. It's a 35 percent increase.

Ariana McLaughlin's daughter was one of those injured victims who was hit by a distracted driver.

"Just seeing her in the hospital making that time to go see her in the hospital every day when you have another teen at home you have to take care of working full time..." she says tearfully.

Billboards and other mass media will remind drivers to keep their heads up and watch for pedestrians and cyclists.
