Water floods 18th Street in downtown Denver due to a 12-inch break in a water main on March 6, 2013.

DENVER — A 12-inch break on 18th Street between Arapahoe Street and Curtis Street left hundreds without water and impacted the Wednesday morning commute until crews were able to get it under control shortly before 6 a.m.

Denver Water said the break took place around 4 a.m., with water pouring onto the street in front of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Crews said water had been restored to all customers in the area as of 5:35 a.m.

18th Street was closed while crews worked to get the leak under control. Denver Water completed repairs at about 4 p.m.

A paving company is now repaving the entire block. Work is expected to go on overnight, and at least one lane of traffic on 18th Street will remain open between Curtis Street and Arapahoe Street.

Denver Water says all lanes of traffic are expected to reopen by the morning rush hour.
