DENVER -- While women still dominate nursing in terms of employment, they lag behind in terms of earnings.
The average female nurse earns about $51,000 while males earn $61,000 for doing the same jobs.
Many economists are calling the practice of rapid promotion of men over women, in management and female dominated fields the glass escalator.
“We are seeing more men (since the recession) going into traditionally female sectors such as, K-12 education, health care and library sciences,” said DU professor Dr. Cindy Fukami. “If you look at female dominated occupations and look at the men who enter, you will see men being paid more than women.”
But the director of the Rocky Mountain Assembly for Men in Nursing, Dale Colfack, says all the pay disparity could be due to men taking nursing positions in fields requiring more training than just being a general nurse.
“An escalator makes me think of somebody going up you know the ladder really fast, and I don’t think that’s true for any nurse,” said Colfack.
In 1970, less than three percent of all registered nurses were men, in 2000, eight percent and in 2011 the number is closer to 10 percent. Things are changing indeed as construction and factory jobs continue to decline.
