Jerry Buss dies: Longtime Los Angeles Lakers owner dead at 80
LOS ANGELES — Jerry Buss, the Lakers owner who let the team to 10 NBA championships, has died at age 79, according to reports.
According to Fox5SanDiego.com, the first reports came from the Los Angeles Tims.
A self-made millionaire who built his fortune in real estate, Buss bought the Lakers in 1979.
Over the next three decades, he charted his successful course with marquee players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, future Hall of Fame coaches Pat Riley and Phil Jackson, celebrities sitting courtside and Laker Girls dancing during timeouts.
It all added up to a sense of showmanship that helped transform the NBA into a commercial juggernaut.
