LITTLETON, Colo. — A Littleton mother is looking for answers after a magazine designed for adults showed up in her mailbox—addressed to her 10-year-old son.
The popular and sexy Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition reaches more than 70 million people worldwide.
But now it’s reaching an audience that’s raising the eyebrows of some parents.
They say boys will be boys. And mom, Roxanne Piro, would like to keep them that way.
“I’ve only got maybe three years or four years before we breach into that territory. So I’d like to keep them as young and innocent as possible,” she says.
But it’s tougher to do when your child gets something intended for adults.
“Got the mail. I got back and saw that my Sports Illustrated was there,” says 5th grader Jaxsen Brooks.
But he soon learned it wasn’t his usual Sports Illustrated Kids.
“Yah, it was the swimsuit edition and I didn’t really want to read it,” he says.
“We’ve had the Sports Illustrated Kids issue for two years now and this is the first time we ever received the swimsuit edition,” says his mom.
The 10-year-old found the bare skin and provocative poses a little embarrassing.
“It’s inappropriate number one and also I’m kinda not into that kinda stuff,” says the boy, with a cringing expression.
And his mom strung together a few choice words about the string bikinis, or lack of.
“That’s inappropriate,” she says. “It wasn’t normal. It was very scantily clad swimsuits. More than years past.”
But Brooks’ 5-year-old cousin didn’t mind.
“’He just made that little whistling sound.’ What do you mean? I ask. ‘He want phew phew,’” he laughs.
Mom hopes the mailbox will again be a safe place where they get their bills–and her son, his Sports Illustrated Kids magazine—minus the models.
“I would like to think maybe there was a mix-up and I’m hoping it’s not going to come again next year,” she says.
Sports Illustrated spokesperson Scott Novak said he doesn’t know if this was a mistake. But he is looking into it.
