DENVER — Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia is a front-runner to become the country’s next Secretary of Labor, according to Reuters.

Garcia declined to comment and Gov. John Hickenlooper’s spokesman Eric Brown told FOX31 Denver Thursday afternoon that, while they won’t comment on who the White House may be considering for cabinet positions, they’re happy to heap praise on Garcia.

“Joe Garcia is one of the most extraordinary individuals I’ve worked with,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “Everything he does he excels at, and that record has led him from humble beginnings to Harvard Law School and the Office of Lieutenant Governor. We would hate to lose him, but our loss without question would be the nation’s gain.”

Garcia, a former president of Colorado State University-Pueblo, was tapped as Hickenlooper’s running mate in 2010 and has focused on education issues at the Capitol.

Obama has been criticized of late for not nominating more women and minorities to cabinet posts.

The current Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is planning to leave the Obama administration as soon as a successor is confirmed by the Senate.
