Explore Colorado: Ski Lesson at Keystone
Jennifer Broome takes us for a ski lesson in Keystone.
January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. It is the perfect time to take a first lesson or take your skiing and boarding skills to the next level. I got a chance to tag along as a father-daughter pair learned to ski at Keystone. James and Madison took their first ever ski lesson with Cathy Spierling, one of the instructors in Keystone Ski & Ride School. Lessons start with getting to know the gear, then getting comfortable with one ski on, and gradually builds to the point of taking short runs and learning to get on and off chair lift.
Children can start as young as 3 to learn to ski. It is recommended for first-timers to take lesson on consecutive days.
Before you hit the slopes, you want to make sure you are dressed correctly and have the right gear. You can rent skis, poles, snowboards, boots, and helmets. Christy Sports in Keystone recommends dressing in layers with a base layer shirt that wicks away moisture, mid-layer shirt, base layer thermal pants, gloves or mittens, ski jacket, and ski pants. They also suggest goggles, sunscreen, and a neck gator or scarf. There are Christy Sports locations in the mountains and all along the Front Range.
