LONGMONT, Colo. – An escaped inmate stole an ambulance that was being used to tend to an elderly fall victim Sunday morning.

Longmont police said 51-year-old Robert Taylor stole an ambulance while paramedics were responding to a call that an 86-year-old woman had fallen.

Just after 3 a.m., Taylor allegedly saw the engine running and took the ambulance from the 1900 block of Corey Street. No one was in the ambulance at the time.

Taylor then headed west on 19th Avenue near Main Street, and ambulance personnel contacted police to report the stolen ambulance.

Police arrested Taylor after he stopped driving the vehicle after only six blocks. The officer said Taylor smelled like alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet.

Taylor told police that he was cold at the time of his arrest.

Police found out Taylor had an outstanding felony warrant for escaping from the Colorado Department of Corrections. He was also listed as a missing person out of Fort Collins, according to a police report.

Taylor was taken to the Boulder County Jail.
