UPDATE: Police cancel alert after toddler found safe

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two days after entrusting the care of her daughter to a friend, a Colorado Springs mother and police are asking the public for help in a search for a missing 2-year-old.

As of 7:30 a.m., an Amber Alert had been issued for the missing toddler, Essence Lovato.

Lovato was last seen with 28-year-old Tonia Shetina. Lovato’s mother gave her daughter to Shetina on Monday with the understanding that the toddler would be transported to her grandfather’s home.

As of Wednesday morning, it had been well over 24 hours since anyone had seen Lovato or Shetina, the latter of whom is now being considered a person of interest in the investigation.

Police say Lovato is 2 feet tall and weighs 28 pounds. She has brown hair that extends to the middle of her back and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a short sleeve pink and black striped shirt with black leggings.

Shetina has blond hair and was last seen driving a 2000 green Honda Accord with a Colorado temporary license plate numbered 592716K.
