Deputies shoot, kill suspect outside of Jeffco King Soopers

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — It was a welcome sight when shopping returned to a sense of normalcy after an officer-involved shooting at a Jefferson County King Soopers.

The scene was very different around 9:15 p.m. Saturday night, after authorities said a man walked into the supermarket with a handgun visible in his back pocket. He was reportedly wandering around the store talking to himself.

“We had two employees who recognized we had a dangerous situation in the store and notified the Jeffco Sheriff’s Department,” said Kelli McGannon, a spokeswoman for King Soopers.

Deputies arrived, and waited for the man to walk outside of the store.

“When he exited, he was contacted by deputies and the shots were fired,” an officer said.

The man, who has only been identified as a 40-year-old from Jefferson County, was shot and killed by deputies. He was found to be in possession of multiple weapons.

“All I heard was pop, pop, pop, pop, and the man just dropped,” said Tyler, a witness who was in the parking lot when the shots were fired.

“Once I got a little closer in the parking lot and saw the man had died, my stomach just flipped,” Tyler said.

There were no customers, employees or deputies injured during the incident. For some, the shopping center will never be the same.
