DENVER – The driver of a SUV that hit and killed two construction workers on South Broadway Tuesday has been cited for careless driving causing death, police said.
Thomas Garrity, 74, of Bellvue Neb., was driving on C-470 and was exiting onto Broadway when he lost control and hit the two workers, said Trooper Nate Reid of the Colorado State Patrol.
A mechanical inspection of his SUV will be conducted to check if the brakes malfunctioned resulting in the crash. A spokesman for the Patrol said if there was a malfunction, the charges against Garrity may change.
The crash killed Jesus Villalobos, 27, from Brighton and Joe Schwartz, 47, from Morrison.
Villalobos wife, Edith Carabo, told FOX31 News " "I can't believe it I talked to him 20 minutes before and he said he was okay and he's supposed to get up and get out of working and he was so happy."
Carabo said Villalobos worked as much overtime as he could.
"He was trying to pay the house he always dreamed," she said.
CDOT spokesman Stacey Stegman said the men were contract employees working for Concrete Works of Colorado. They are the first employees to be killed on the job in the company's history.
The crash closed South Broadway for much of the day.
