BRIGHTON, Colo. -- Miles away from the family home in Westminster; 27-year-old Irene Walker sits in the Adams County Jail.

Walker was arrested on Thursday and has been charged with child abuse and contributing to the death of her 3-year-old niece, Jersey Ruiz.

Walker was reportedly taking care of her niece when Ruiz was rushed to St. Anthony's Central in mid-September. That is where Ruiz was later pronounced dead.

A Facebook page that has been labeled “In memory of Jersey Ruiz," shows pictures of Ruiz as a happy, carefree little girl.

Records show walker has lived at a few different Metro-area addresses over the past few years. At one location, FOX 31 knocked on the door and heard a TV, but no one answered.

A neighbor who lives a few doors down did answer the door -- but didn't want to be identified.

“I'm a grandma, so I wouldn't know what to do if somebody did something like that,” she said.

The chance to hear Walker's side of the story may take a while. She is being held at the Adam's County Jail on $100,000 bond.

FOX 31 reached out to Walker at the jail for a statement, but she denied talking to reporters about what happened.
