DENVER — A Denver woman who pleaded guilty to wrapping a baby too tightly in a blanket and placing him in a closet was sentenced to four years in prison Thursday.

Frances Garcia pleaded guilty to a charge of child abuse negligently causing death earlier this year, said Denver DA spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough.

Prosecutors said that on Aug. 5, 2011 she wrapped 10-month-old Adam Gonzales too tightly in a blanket and placed him in a closet with a propped up bottle. She then covered him with another blanket, Kimbrough said.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kerri Lombardi argued for the maximum possible sentence of 12 years in prison, while Garcia’s defense attorney asked for probation. The judge ended up giving her the minimum sentence of four years, Kimbrough said.

The child’s mother has already pleaded guilty to accessory to child abuse resulting in death and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 6.
