LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. – Smoke from a fire burning in the San Juan National Forest prompted state officials to issue a health advisory for eastern portions of La Plata County Saturday.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued a wildfire smoke health advisory for the towns of Durango, Vallecito and Bayfield from 4 p.m. Saturday until at least 4 p.m. Sunday because of the Vallecito Fire.
State officials urge those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly to stay indoors if the smoke becomes too thick.
The fire has burned up to 800 acres west of the Vallecito Reservoir since it was first reported on Oct. 16. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
