DENVER — Police say they found a woman’s decomposing body in an apartment, and her husband and dog were sitting nearby when they responded to a call on Monday.

Officers received a call about a nasty smell in the south Denver apartment building at 1240 South Birch Street. When they arrived, they found the body slumped on a couch.

Records show police asked the husband how long his wife had been dead. He told officers, “She’s not dead. She’s fine.” Meanwhile, the dog, a Great Dane, made an effort to guard the woman’s body.

Police have since identified that woman as 32-year-old Michaela Beth Ford. The man was identified as her husband, Steven Ford, who police said was “out of sorts” when they entered the apartment.

The body’s decomposition appeared to indicate that the woman had been dead for approximately 10 days, according to police.

The woman’s husband is yet to be charged as police continue their investigation.
