Obama cancels Colo. Springs rally, schedules another for Thursday

DENVER – President Barack Obama has cancelled his rally that was scheduled for Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs to monitor Hurricane Sandy, according to a White House press release.

Obama will return to Washington to continue to monitor the hurricane following a campaign event in Ohio on Monday. A campaign event that was scheduled in Northern Virginia on Monday was also cancelled because of the storm.  

The Obama campaign announced that the president has made tentative plans to visit Boulder for the third time this year on Thursday. Details on the time and place of the rally have not been released.

According to a statement made by the White House Saturday night, “The President is being regularly updated on the storm and ongoing preparations, and he has directed his team to continue to bring all available resources to bear as state and local partners continue to prepare for the storm.”

The press release said that FEMA has deployed teams and has pre-staged resources to potentially affected areas of the storm.

The rally that was scheduled in Colorado Springs’ Red Rock Canyon Open Space park on Tuesday was meant to focus on issues such as the economy and early voting, according to a campaign spokesperson.
