LIMON, Colo. — Nine semis were involved in an accident on I-70 west of Limon Friday morning, resulting in several of those vehicles going off the road.

One of them caught fire.

CDOT confirmed at 10:20 a.m. that there were multiple accidents  near mile marker 340, approximately three miles east of Agate. Four of those accidents, according to spokesman Bob Wilson, were pileups and most of the vehicles involved were semis.

The Colorado State Patrol initially believed that at least one truck was carrying explosives, but CDOT confirmed that upon further examination  it appears the truck was only carrying a glue-like substance.

The accident did not result in any injuries, according to the State Patrol.

I-70 was initially closed in both directions, but eastbound lanes were quickly opened to through traffic. Westbound lanes remained closed, with Wilson indicating authorities expect it will be “several hours” before the closure is lifted.

Two detour routes can be used during the westbound closure.

From Limon, drivers are being instructed to take Hwy 71 north to Last Chance and then U.S. 36 west to Byers before getting back on I-70.

Alternate routes include taking I-70 west to State Hwy 86 (Exit 352), taking Hwy 86 west to Franktown and State Highway 83 (Parker Road) or taking Hwy 86 to Castle Rock and then I-25 north toward Denver.
