Following Ridgeway tragedy, gym offers free self defense class for kids
At Sound Body, Sound Mind Fitness in Arvada, both the bodies and minds of children are learning something that may save their lives.
With Jessica Ridgeway’s disappearance and death never far from their thoughts, owner Amy Melnick and black belt Kenny Yoo think now is the best time to take the first step.
“You’ve got to start by being proactive, not reactive,” Yoo said.
Broken up into groups young children and pre-teen, Yoo is teaching free lessons about two basic principles: the “art” of the scream and the act of distance.
Both principle interest mother Shawna Tregembo, who was attending one of Yoo’s courses with her 5 year-old daughter Ava Saturday.
“I just want her to be aware of what’s out there and people who are not always in her best interests,” Tregembo said. “I want to make sure she’s aware.”
And hopefully now more children will know and remember what to do if danger gets too close.
Want to take part in the course? You can bring your children to The Point Athletic Club on Fri. Oct. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. or on Sat. Oct. 27 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. All classes are free.
