John Elway endorses Mitt Romney

DENVER — President Barack Obama’s challenger drew a heavy hitter to his rally in Denver Monday night. That would be the Denver Broncos’ John Elway.

“Tonight, I get the opportunity to introduce to you the next President of the United States, governor Mitt Romney,” the two-time Super Bowl champion boomed out in his famous raspy baritone.

At Romney’s rally at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Lowry, Elway continued to call Romney a “proven leader with the experience and background to turn around our struggling economy.”

“America needs a comeback team,” Elway, a veteran of many a fourth quarter comeback, said. “Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are that team.”

Our Eli Stokols capitalized on that rhetoric from Elway, using it as a lead-in to a question you wanted answered.

In a poll we posted online before our exclusive interview with Romney last night – the last interview with the GOP candidate before the debate with Obama at the University of Denver on Wednesday – you said you wanted to know how Romney would pay for his new tax plan without raising taxes on the middle class.

A lot of folks wonder if your tax plan will be a good thing for folks other than Peyton Manning and John Elway, Stokols said. Our political reporter then asked: How are you going to pay for this plan?

“We’re going to bring down the rates for everybody and limit deductions on credits for people at the high end,” Romney responded. “The key thing is encouraging small business to hire more people.”

Among those unemployed masses that Romney is hoping to reach, a guy like Elway is pretty popular — as Romney well knows.

“I’m delighted to have John Elway’s support,” Romney said. “He knows how to connect.”
