DENVER — Down in most polls and running out of time, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is looking at Wednesday night’s debate here at the University of Denver as perhaps his last, best chance of convincing the American people that he should be the country’s next president.

On Monday night, just prior to a rally at Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, Romney will sit down with FOX31 Denver for his last television interview before what many observers are calling the most important night of his political life.

The interview will air during our 9 and 10 p.m. newscasts. You can watch it streaming live by clicking here.

Wednesday’s debate is the last of three potential pivot points identified by Romney’s campaign earlier this year; and the stakes are higher than ever with polls showing President Barack Obama ahead in most swing state polls, after the first two pivot points — the nomination of running-mate Paul Ryan and the Republican National Convention — having passed without much of a bump for the GOP ticket.

According to political analyst Eric Sondermann, Romney “has zero margin for error” Wednesday night.

“His real problem is a connection problem. He just hasn’t passed that test of connecting with a critical mass of voters in this country. He’s gotta make that kind of connection. Tone means probably as much as mood and substance.”

On a conference call Monday morning, Romney’s top advisers told reporters that they would continue to simplify the campaign’s message over the final five weeks, echoing his latest ad and framing the election as a referendum on President Obama’s first term, concluding, “We cannot afford four more years like the last four years.”

Romney aims to draw contrasts with Obama over policies, but has yet to offer real specifics on his tax plan, among other things.

In our interview with Romney, FOX31 will press for more specifics on issues that affect Coloradans. And we want your input. See the poll below to give it, and don’t forget:
