KINGSWEAR, U.K. — The owners of the Dart Princess said that “it could have been serious” if Alison Whelan was able to reach the ocean after stealing their ferry boat. That possibility never materialized — likely due to the woman’s mental state — so instead the world is getting a good laugh at the would-be pirate’s expense.

According to the BBC, Whelan was found guilty by a British magistrate of “aggravated vehicle taking” Wednesday, for jumping aboard the Paignton Pleasure Cruises’ 50-foot vessel on Sept. 10, 2011, untying the ropes that fasted it to a dock and drifting away down the River Dart.

While police watched, Whelan screamed, “I’m Jack Sparrow,” referring to Johnny Depp’s character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. It was later found that she had been drinking for two days and was also eating hallucinogenic deadly nightshade, a poisonous narcotic, at the time of the incident.

Police first arrived on the scene because Whelan had called them — she said she was having a seizure. When police arrived, they found Whelan conscious and vigorous, and became involved in a pursuit that lasted more than an hour.

Whelan hit two different docked vessels during the pursuit, causing about $2,500 in damages before she was apprehended.
