Lifeguards fired for filming Gangnam Style remake at pool
EL MONTE, Calif. — The music video shown above was supposed to be fun, but it caused a group of lifeguards their jobs.
Their mistake, according to city officials, was making a spoof of the crossover summer song, Gangnam Style by Korean rapper PSY, while using the public pool facility at the El Monte Aquatic Center as a background.
The lifeguards’ version, called Lifeguard Style, was posted on YouTube. The 13 life guards and pool manager who appeared in the video where then fired.
The city says the filming of the video was a clear unauthorized use of resources and property. The lifeguards say they will petition for their jobs back at the next El Monte City Council meeting.
