LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- After being attacked by a passenger, a police officer in Lakewood shot the driver of a stolen vehicle as she attempted to flee the scene of a traffic stop early Thursday morning.

The 40-year-old driver later died from her injuries at a nearby hospital. The police said they will not release her identity until the Jefferson County Coroner's Office has completed its investigation.

Lakewood police said the incident began with an officer conducting a traffic stop on Pierce Street just north of West Colfax Avenue at approximately 12:20 a.m. During the stop, a second officer came to assist on the passenger's side of the vehicle. That's when things got dicey.

The passenger, Bernard John Trujillo, 48, became combative, according to police, and was tased by the assisting officer. At that point, the driver started the car and attempted to drive off. With his arm pinned inside the vehicle, the assisting officer fired a shot that struck the female driver.

It was later confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the week in Denver. Trujillo was arrested on a parole violation, and it is anticipated that additional charges will be forthcoming.

The officers involved in the incident were uninjured, according to police, and both  will be placed on administrative leave as the incident is investigated, per department policy.
