Obama plans Fort Collins rally during RNC

DENVER – President Barack Obama will hold a large rally with supporters in Fort Collins next Tuesday night, just as the Republican National Convention gets underway in Tampa Bay, Fla., FOX31 Denver was first to report Tuesday afternoon.

The rally is going to be held on the campus of Colorado State University around 6 p.m.

With all eyes on the RNC, the Obama campaign is looking to upstage the GOP ticket, or at least compete for air time, in critical swing states like Colorado.

Next week’s Colorado stop is part of a two-day campaign swing through three swing states, with rallies at Iowa State University in Ames on Tuesday prior to the rally in Fort Collins and another Wednesday at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville — all aimed at drawing attention away from the RNC and Romney during the GOP’s big week in Tampa.

On Wednesday night, the third night of the RNC, First Lady Michelle Obama is set to appear on Late Night with David Letterman.

Expect the Romney campaign to return the favor the following week when the DNC is held in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Obama held several large rallies in Colorado in the closing days of the 2008 race, drawing crowds measuring well over 30,000 in Pueblo, Denver and Fort Collins.
