Whooping cough on the rise, use these tips for prevention

DENVER — Whooping cough is a condition that is especially dangerous for kids, and back-to-school time is an excellent time to pay attention to preventing kids from catching it.

Whooping cough is a respiratory tract infection that’s highly contagious and medical experts say it’s on the rise.

Parents need to know the signs to protect their kids.

Dr. Toni L. Thompson-Chittams of TLC Pediatrics says vaccinations are the key to preventing whooping cough and adds, “We have to keep in mind that whooping cough occurs in cycles and it generally peaks every three to five years. You have to take into consideration that the vaccine can wane over time,” she says.

The symptoms of whooping cough include a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, fever and a dry cough.

Doctors recommend that babies start a series of five vaccination shots beginning at age two months, plus a booster between ages 11 and 12.

Anyone who takes care of  little ones should be vaccinated as well.

Most cases in babies are tracked back to the caregiver.

These are recommendations but only your personal pediatrician can provide appropriate advice for your child.
