High school golf captain loses legs in train accident near Colorado Springs

MONUMENT, Colo. — A Monument teenager was lying on the ground alone, screaming and missing his legs below the knees on a set of train tracks when he was discovered early Saturday morning.

It was a group of fellow teens who discovered Luke Hiser, 17, bloodied and crying in pain near the site of a party that was taking place in a barn. The general area of the accident was reported in a 911 call as near Monument Lake north of Colorado Springs.

One of the teens who called 911 told dispatchers that Hiser “apparently got run over … in the middle of nowhere” and was bleeding heavily.

“His foot is completely gone,” the caller said, after reporting that the accident occurred at a train crossing near Monument lake. The caller also reported that Hiser was in and out of consciousness and that the group of teens was trying to keep him awake.

Hiser was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. He has since been upgraded to good condition, according to a hospital spokesman.

Hiser is a senior at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument and is a captain on the school’s golf team.
