Former band teacher gets 2 years in jail for videotaping up girls’ skirts
GOLDEN, Colo. — A former band teacher at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School was sentenced Friday to two years in jail for using his cell phone to shoot video up skirts, dresses and shorts, and down the shirts of female students.
Matthew Taylor, 39, also faces 15 years of sex offender intensive supervision and he must register as a sex offender.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s office says several female students became concerned about Taylor’s behavior when they saw what they believed was the band teacher using his cell phone to take their pictures without permission.
“The girls said that Taylor would stand very close to them, close enough to make them feel uncomfortable,” says DA spokeswoman Pam Russell. “When they were outside during band practice Taylor would sometimes stand on higher ground, holding his cell phone up, covering it with something so as to hide the action, and take pictures.”
Investigators found hundreds of video images of female students between the ages of 13 and 17 on his computer.
“By April 7, 2011 the teens became more concerned about his behavior, saying it was becoming ‘progressively worse,’” Russell says.
“One of the teens began using her own phone to take still photographs of Taylor’s interaction with the other girls. She and two of her friends contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. They were able to provide those photos to deputies.”
There were 27 victims under whose skirts, dresses or shorts Taylor had videotaped. Taylor also videotaped the chest area or cleavage of a number of girls.
He pleaded guilty to attempted sexual exploitation of a child and harassment on June 11, 2012.
