WASHINGTON — About 1.3 GE dishwashers are being recalled due to “heating element failures” that have resulted in fires in several homes.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers are being placed under a voluntary recall.

“GE has received 15 reports of dishwasher heating element failures, including seven reports of fires, three of which caused extensive property damage,” the Commission wrote. “No injuries have been reported.”

The household appliances were sold nationwide from March 2006 through Aug 2009. The commission said owners should not only quit using the dishwashers, but also disconnect them from the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker.

GE will provide a rebate between $75 and $100 to owners of the defective dishwashers to be used toward the purchase of a new GE dishwasher. For more information, call GE at 866-918-8760 between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. MST, Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s recall website.
