AURORA, Colo. — Thousands of people attended the prayer vigil for the victims of the Aurora theater shooting at the Aurora Municipal Center Sunday night. Victims and family members were honored, along with first responders.
Family members wept as the names of each of the 12 people killed were read aloud. But there were crowds of people standing behind them, wanting to show their support. Many came with signs and candles.
“Just to show the victims of the tragedy that we aren’t afraid to go out and we love them and support them,” said Briana Gillespie.
Steve Hogan, the Mayor of Aurora, told the crowd that this horrible act of violence does not define the city, but the incredible acts of heroes do.
“Because of them more lives weren’t lost and more harm wasn’t done,” he said.
Governor Hickenlooper agreed. He told the crowd he refuses to say the gunman’s name. He also had a message for the victims and their families.
“Our community is here for you. Colorado is here for you and always will be.”
