LAKE COUNTY, Colo. – An 18-year-old Leadville man is dead after leading deputies on a high-speed chase through three mountain counties Saturday morning.

According to a Colorado State Patrol representative, a trooper was able to spin the suspect’s car to a stop using a “Tactical Vehicle Intervention” (TVI) maneuver near Villa Grove in Saguache County. The suspect “jumped out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at the trooper” when he was shot by another officer.

The chase began around 5:00 a.m. when a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a Chevy Impala for speeding. The driver fired a gun at the deputy and sped off, according to the CSP.

The suspect led law enforcement through Lake County, Chaffee County and Sagauche County, and reportedly fired his gun multiple times at pursuing officers.

In Lake County, the suspect threw what appeared to be a pipe-bomb grenade. Three homes were evacuated and the area was roped off. An explosives team disposed of the device.
