Protect your property: Car thefts on the rise

DENVER — Car theft is a problem in Colorado. In Boulder there were 53 vehicles reported stolen in the first six months of the year.

That’s compared to 46 over the same time last year. But most of the thefts had several things in common.

The victims left their cars unlocked, or their windows down. They left a spare set of keys in the car, and there were valuables such as purses left in full view.

Boulder police say thieves are usually looking for an easy steal. So here is some of their advice:
–Always lock your car, even in your own driveway
–Don’t leave valuables in site
–Don’t leave the car running
–Don’t leave your windows down
–Park in well-lit areas
–And consider an alarm or device like LoJack

Car thefts are such a problem, a group called Coloradans Against Auto Theft will launch a statewide prevention campaign on Tuesday morning at Red Rocks.

Experts say in these summer months thieves target some popular venues, and drivers should be on alert.

“Every day, every month there is a car stolen in Colorado. So it can happen to you, but there is so much you can do to prevent that crime,” said Carole Walker an insurance industry spokesperson.

She says even if you are not directly affected by auto theft, everyone will pay for it through higher car insurance premiums.
