Sharp increase in rattlesnake bites hits Loveland area

LOVELAND, Colo. — Rattlesnake bites are on a dramatic rise in the Loveland area.
Emergency room personnel at McKee Medical Center say they treated five rattlesnake bite victims during the month of June. That’s according to a story in the Loveland Reporter-Herald.
One resident told the newspaper she found two rattlesnakes in her front yard in two weeks. She says other residents in the Enchantment Ridge areas off W. 43rd St. have encountered them as well.
The hospital emergency room normally sees one or two rattlesnake bites a year. It has seen six victims so far this year. One was at the end of May and the other five in June.
Experts say if you get a rattlesnake bite, call 911 immediately. Stay as calm as possible to keep your metabolism from speeding up and immobilize the area of the bite.
Doctors treat rattlesnake bites with CroFab, a snake antivenom.
Rattlesnakes usually won’t go in search of finding someone to bite. It normally happens when someone steps on the snake. They’re defensive creatures by nature.
