Memorial run for Denver jogger killed on Father’s Day
AURORA, Colo. — A free memorial run will take place Saturday in Aurora for the Littleton man killed while jogging on Father’s Day.
Mike Fontes, 60, was jogging southbound on Downing Street on June 17 when he attempted to cross Speer Boulevard without a green light and was hit and killed by a van carrying members of a church group.
Fontes’ running club, Runner’s Edge of the Rockies, will host the Saturday run, which will be held at the Aurora Runners Roost location starting at 6:30 a.m. The group said the run will be held to memorialize Fontes and to raise awareness about safety for runners in the area.
Fontes began jogging later in life for health reasons and had recently qualified to run the Boston Marathon.
