Commentary: Broncos training camp can’t come soon enough

DENVER — Ah, the dog days of summer. In the sports world, it can be very quiet.
Right now we have the Rockies, Rapids and Outlaws going on. I am trying to say this as nicely as I can. The Rockies aren’t very good. Okay, they stink at the moment. Hopefully that will change. The Rapids and Outlaws are competitive, so that’s nice. But come on man! I know you are like me. You are craving football. I’ll take it all. High school, college and of course the NFL.
On Monday, the Broncos released the 2012 training camp schedule. The first day they hit the field for the public is Thursday, July 26th. Can’t wait! I am sure students during summer break want their vacation to last forever. I want it to fly by. Sorry kids. This sportscaster wants to see Peyton Manning throw the pigskin in a Broncos uniform again. I want to go to Colorado and Colorado State practices. I want to see high schools get ready for another season of hopes and dreams.
I am most excited about the Broncos. What a year it has been for this franchise. They had Kyle Orton and he was awful. They went with Tim Tebow and expectations were not very high. Tebow did his 4th quarter thing and Denver found a way to get to the playoffs. Not only did they get to the post season, but they won a game. It was all about Tebowmania. Then the Broncos were crushed by the Patriots.
Still, it was an incredible season.
Then it got crazier.
Peyton Manning was let go by the Colts. John Elway wanted him. Manning looked around and realized Denver would be his next home. Just like that, Tebow was gone. Traded to the Jets.
Some people were sad to see Tim go, but most had Manning Mania. There was the news conference, the OTAs and the mandatory minicamps. It was all great, but it went by too fast. Now we have to wait until July 26th. It feels like forever.
I know Bronco fans are anxious. This team is a Super Bowl contender. When you have Manning on your team, you get to have that right. If this team doesn’t get to the playoffs, it will be a bust. The only way I see them not getting there is if Manning gets hurt.
Don’t worry, I just knocked on wood.
I think fans will be disappointed if Denver doesn’t get to the Super Bowl, especially if they don’t get there after year two. There is probably a three-year window for the Broncos to do that. Remember Manning is 36. I think it will happen. Who has the best chance of getting to a championship first? The Broncos, Nuggets, Avalanche or Rockies? It’s an easy call. The Broncos have the best chance, and that makes these dog days even tougher.
It will be ok. I know eventually football will get here. Fridays, Saturday and Sundays will be phenomenal once again. The anticipation only makes it even better.
