Burglars target metro Denver pizza shops
DENVER – Most customers come to Abo’s for the pizza, but some crooks came for another kind of dough.
Burglars have hit six of the 12 Abo’s stores in metro Denver – some repeatedly.
The most recent burglary occurred early Wednesday morning at the Abo’s Pizza at 2145 E. 120th Ave. in Northglenn.
The store’s owner, Justin Kehoe, says it looks like they used a crowbar to pry the front door open.
“That’s where they pulled it out,” says General Manager Eric Bruner, about the store’s safe. “There were four 11-inch bolts, and they just yanked it out and walked out with it.”
Burglars walked out with it about two weeks ago, but apparently their appetite wasn’t quite satisfied.
“My store has been broken into over the night three times in the past two months,” says Kehoe.
The first time was in April.
He installed a security system after the second burglary, but that didn’t keep thieves from breaking in again and stealing more money around 4:00 a.m. Wednesday.
“Violated, angry, fed up,” he says. “I’m just done. I either want to give up, close the shop down, or get these guys.”
“Other than camping out here every night, I don’t know what else to do,” says Bruner.
Burglars also took a big piece of the financial pie at Kehoe’s brother’s store at 799 U.S. Highway 287 in Broomfield.
Again, by prying open the front door.
“It does get frustrating,” Brian Kehoe says. “They keep coming back.”
The first time they stole a flat screen TV and cash; the second time it was the safe.
“I expect it to happen now, so I don’t leave any money in the store anymore,” Brian says.
The brothers say the repeated burglaries upset their stomachs.
They hope the public can help.
“Hopefully, they can keep their eyes peeled, and if they see anything call police. It’s happening all over,” Justin says. “We’re just regular people like you, just trying to get by, so please help us out.”
Burglaries also took place in Boulder (2), Denver (1) and Erie (2).
The brothers tell us they’ve also gotten calls from about five other stores that have been burglarized during the same two month period. The other five stores were different franchises.
