Loveland police officer facing child porn charges resigns

LOVELAND, Colo. — A police officer with 19 years of service who is accused of possessing more than 20 pornographic photos of children as well video of a woman showering has resigned from the Loveland Police Department.

The Loveland Herald reported that Police Chief Luke Hecker received a letter of resignation from Rod Bretches Monday. The letter was dated Thursday, June 14, and Bretches did not cite a reason for his resignation.

Bretches, 48, had been on paid administrative since late May when he was charged with felony sexual exploitation of a child and misdemeanor peeping. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison. The misdemeanor charge could lead to 24 months in prison. Bretches’ court date is July 30.

A search warrant for Bretches’ residence was served on May 22 after a woman accused him of filming her in the shower and then posting the video to several pornographic websites. Upon searching his home, police discovered more than 20 pornographic images of children.

During his 19 years on the force, Bretches was one of the Loveland Police Department’s first police dog handlers and has given K9 presentations throughout the community.
