LAKE GEORGE, Colo. – Authorities say the Springer Fire in southeast Park County has doubled in size since Sunday evening, and has now burned 970-acres.

The fire, which was first reported around noon on Sunday, was burning without any containment Monday five miles southwest of Lake George.

Approximately 150 homes have been evacuated.

“Hand crews, engines, helicopters and air tankers are battling the fire and have kept the fire from becoming established on the South side of Elevenmile Canyon,” according to incident commanders. “Two heavy air tankers and two helicopters along with a lead plane are operating today.”

Roughly 250 firefighters are battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Evacuees are being directed to Woodland Park High School. Large animals from the evacuation areas can be sheltered at the fairgrounds in Cripple Creek.
