DENVER – A juvenile suspect was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a shooting in the heart of downtown Denver.

At about 2 p.m., police responded to the 1500 block of California Street, next to the bustling 16th Street Mall and adjacent to a Light Rail station.

Police say the incident began as a dispute involving the young suspect and an adult male.

“This may or may not have started on the Light Rail (train) at a different location and culminated here with the two individuals getting off the Light Rail and getting into the altercation,” said Denver Police Det. John White.

White said the suspect shot the man in the leg and then fled on-foot. Officers chased the suspect, eventually catching him two blocks away 13th and Welton streets.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with a non-life threatening wound.

“The good thing is that in such a heavily and highly populated area that no one else was injured,” said White.
