Police arrest 3 CU-Boulder students protesting 4/20 closure

BOULDER, Colo. — Police arrested three people who were protesting the 4/20 closure of campus Friday afternoon.

The three men, who identified themselves as seniors at the university, crossed police lines to sit in apparent protest at the closed Norlin Quad.

C.U. Police say each was arrested for trespassing and could face up to six months in jail and $750 in fines.

Police officers and Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies monitored all entrances to the Boulder campus Friday as administrators tried to put a stop to the annual 4/20 marijuana smoke-out on campus.

April 20th, referred to as “4/20,” is typically a big day for marijuana smoke-outs. The main event happens at 4:20 p.m.

A small crowd gathered but police blocked them from entering Norlin Quad where thousands have gathered in the past. The small group moved to another grassy area on the campus.

They protested the closure of the campus by starting at a park and then marching on the university.

“Shortly after 4 p.m., a group of protesters marched from the University Hill area into campus,” says CU Police spokesman Ryan Huff. “A group of approximately 300 gathered on a lawn area near the Duane Physics and Astrophysics Building. Approximately 400 people watched from the perimeter of the lawn area. The gathering lasted no more than 30 minutes. The group left without incident.”

Police say in all there were three arrests for trespassing, 11 tickets issued for trespassing and one ticket issued for possession of marijuana.

The event drew 10,000 people to the C.U. campus in 2011. Administrators say it is too disrupting to normal operations at the school.

Friday’s closure of the campus to all but authorized students and faculty is unprecedented for a public university.
