With many phone customers abandoning or minimizing their use of “land lines,” the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is offering residents the option to register their cell phones for emergency alerts, such as wildfire evacuations.

Those interested can register their cell phone or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) online here.

Text message alerts are not available.

“Subscribers’ wireless and VoIP information will be kept in a separate database, so that if subscribers are already in the 9-1-1 landline database their information will not be changed,” the Sheriff’s Office says.
