Elway kicks Colts – again
DENVER — The Broncos acquisition of Peyton Manning is not the first time that they’ve improved their quarterback position at the expense of the Colts.
In fact, it has more than a bit of irony to it that John Elway, the man who orchestrated the deal, was responsible for the previous instance as well.
In the 1983 NFL Draft, Elway was selected as the first overall pick by the then Baltimore Colts. Elway had played the previous two summers for a minor league team of the New York Yankees and threatened to play baseball full-time unless the Colts traded him.
Robert Irsay, the father of current Colts owner Jim Irsay, traded Elway to the Broncos who subsequently led them to two Super Bowl victories.
Will history repeat itself ?
