THORNTON, Colo. -- Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that caused extensive damage to a home in Thornton on Christmas Day. Three adults and three children were displaced.

The fire broke out in the 1300 block of 100th Lane mid-afternoon.

Firefighters encountered intense flames and plumes of smoke engulfing the 2-story home when they first arrived on the scene.

No one was home when the fire broke out.

The house sustained extensive damaged and caused exterior damage to a neighboring home.
